東京を拠点に活動する現代美術作家。金沢美術工芸大学卒業後、キヤノン株式会社にてEOS Rなどのカメラデザインを手がけ、社内ベンチャーのプロジェクトリーダーとしてiNSPiC RECなどの製品化を主導。独立後はスマートフォンのアドバンスデザインや、イメージングブランドkyuの立ち上げやカメラの製品化に携わる。2024年より本格的にアーティストとしての活動を開始し、日本の伝統工業であるカメラをモチーフとした制作を行っている。

 

ARTIST STATEMENT

私は、「新記憶」をテーマに、「カメラ」関連の作品を制作しています。自動化や仮想化が加速する現代社会において、能動的に記録する意味や記憶の価値を、作品を通じて表現しています。

スマートフォンやSNSの普及によって、私たちは日々の体験を即座に記録し、共有するようになりました。しかしその手軽さが、体験の密度を削ぎ、記憶が沈殿するための時間や感覚の余白を奪っているのではないかと感じています。私は、そうした現代的な記録の構造に対して、カメラという装置を再構築することで応答しています。それは単なる撮影機器ではなく、記憶と向き合うための装置——記録されずに消えていく感情や、忘却の中に浮かび上がる気配に光をあてるためのメディアとして扱っています。

かつて私は、カメラやスマートフォンの開発に携わり、写真や映像の美しさ、そして記録の可能性に魅せられてきました。その経験は今、作品制作において技術と記憶の間を問い直す視座となり、造形と観察のあわいにある表現を支えています。 作品とは、私にとって“記録の形式を借りた記憶の探求”であり、曖昧さやズレのなかに立ち上がる新しい記憶の輪郭を、そっとすくい上げる営みです。

 

Yasuaki Matsuura (b. 1990) is a Tokyo-based contemporary artist whose work centers on the theme of “New Memory.” He creates sculptural and conceptual artworks in the form of fully functional cameras, exploring how memory, perception, and presence are redefined in an age of automation and virtualization.

Matsuura’s practice emerges from a deep understanding of imaging systems. Before fully committing to contemporary art, he spent over a decade as a lead designer at Canon, shaping iconic products such as the EOS R system and IVY REC. Rather than separating his design and artistic backgrounds, he integrates them—transforming tools of documentation into instruments of reflection.

His cameras are not nostalgic objects, but reimagined devices that provoke a return to conscious seeing and meaningful interaction. By building them from scratch, Matsuura invites users to engage with memory not as passive record-keeping, but as embodied experience. Each work proposes a new kind of photographic ritual—slow, intentional, and human.

Since 2024, Matsuura has devoted himself fully to artistic practice, using the camera not only as medium, but as metaphor. His work has been exhibited in Tokyo, London, and Luxembourg, and recognized internationally with awards including iF, Red Dot, and Good Design. As one of the few artists working exclusively through the physical language of the camera, he brings technical precision and poetic clarity to the question of how we remember today.
