山本 晶大（ヤマモト アキヒロ）
現代美術作家
1988年 高知県出身、尾道市立大学美術学科卒業。岡山県在住。

大学生時代を過ごした広島県の尾道市で空き家の再生活動に関わり始め、日本が直面している人口減少や空家増加などの社会問題、そしてその背後で失われていく様々な歴史や文化をリサーチしながら、空き家や古民家などを用いたインスタレーション作品の制作などを行ってきた。
その後ベルリンに渡り、アーティストアシスタントなどの仕事をしつつヨーロッパのアートや建築への理解を深め、現在は岡山へ移住し、中国地方を中心に活動中。

作品について

今回出展を考えている作品は2023年から制作を始めた Lost landscapes というシリーズ作品になります。

このシリーズは建物が取り壊されて駐車場となった場所を調べ、駐車場の敷地のかたちをアスファルトでかたどり、その場所に建っていた建物や風景を白線用の塗料で描くことで失われた建物や街並みに焦点を当て、現在日本で起こっている変化と喪失を表現しています。
また、風景の上から反射塗料で駐車場の区割りを吹き付けて描くことによって、光を当てると現在の駐車場の姿が浮かび上がり、過去と現在が重なり合います。

Akihiro Yamamoto
Contemporary Artist
Born in 1988 in Kochi, Japan.
Graduated from the Department of Fine Arts, Onomichi City University.
Currently lives and works in Okayama Prefecture.

 

While studying in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, I became involved in restoring the many vacant houses in the city’s historic hillside district—home to buildings from the Edo to Showa periods. Working alongside architects and craftspeople, I gained hands-on experience in renovation and developed a deep interest in the social issues tied to depopulation and vacant homes. These experiences led me to create installations in old residences, reflecting on the fading cultures and histories embedded in these structures.

I later moved to Berlin to deepen my understanding of European art and architecture, working as a production assistant and installer in a studio of artists educated by Olafur Eliasson. After returning to Japan and settling in Okayama, I have continued producing installation works throughout the Chugoku region, often through artist residencies focused on local history and regional challenges.

For this art fair, I plan to exhibit works from my Lost Landscapes series, which began in 2023.

In this series, I investigate sites where buildings have been demolished and replaced by parking lots. Using white road line paint, I recreate the outlines of the former buildings directly onto the asphalt surface. By adding reflective paint to delineate the current parking spaces, the work reveals a layered scene—where the past and present intersect when illuminated. These ghostly reconstructions question how space is repurposed and what is lost in the process.

In rural Japan, the rise in vacant houses due to depopulation is matched by high car ownership, driven by limited public transportation. As a result, old towns not designed for cars are being reshaped, and buildings are frequently demolished to make way for parking lots. My work does not aim to judge this trend as simply good or bad. Rather, it highlights the quiet indifference surrounding these changes and invites viewers to reflect on what is disappearing from the everyday landscape of rural Japan.
