tako.toka「たこ・灯花」 is an emerging artist based in Thailand, working primarily with 1-bit pixel art.

Rooted in the black and white aesthetics of Japanese manga, my work draws from quiet, introspective moments, often inspired by memory, solitude, and the stillness between emotions. Through minimal visuals and meticulous detail, I explore themes of identity, imperfection, and the invisible weight people carry.

I chose to use only black, not because it was enough, but because it was what I had.
To me, black is limitation, effort, and hope.

Every piece holds a silent wish within.
Art, for me, is a quiet way of reaching out,
an honest attempt to connect across time, space, and silence.

I was born in 1992 and graduated in 2015 from Rangsit University with a degree in Communication Arts, majoring in Advertising.

"Thank you, Tako Toka-san, for speaking at UNKNOWN ASIA and then visiting Chignitta Gallery afterward. I wasn't at the gallery, but the staff said they really enjoyed talking with you. Your work, though set in a 1-bit world, carries an incredibly deep “emotion of the margins” flowing through it, and I truly feel that quietness so characteristic of you. Your choice to use only black feels less like a limitation and more like a frank admission of “I could only start from there” – I think that very sincerity is what gives your work its strength.
It's truly captivating how you build upon the Japanese manga-like black-and-white aesthetic while carefully scooping up themes like memory, loneliness, and invisible weight through the accumulation of tiny pixels. Your work doesn't shout loudly, yet you find it gently touching your heart. The phrase “art that quietly reaches out” perfectly captures the atmosphere flowing through your world.

たこ灯火さん、UNKNOWN ASIAでお話しして、その後、チグニッタギャラリーも訪ねてくれてありがとうございました。僕がギャラリーにいなかったけど、スタッフがあなたと話せてとても楽しかったって言ってました。あなたの作品は、1ビットの世界なのにものすごく深い“余白の感情”が流れていて、本当にあなたらしい静けさを感じます。黒しか使わないという選択も、制限というより「そこからしか始められなかった」という率直さがあって、むしろその誠実さが作品の強さになっている気がします。
日本のマンガ的な白黒の美学を土台にしつつ、記憶や孤独、見えない重さといったテーマを、小さなピクセルの積み重ねで丁寧に掬い上げているところが本当に魅力的です。あなたの作品は、派手に語りかけてくるわけじゃないのに、気づくとそっと心に触れてくる。 “静かに手を差し伸べるアート”という言葉、そのままの空気があなたの世界に流れていますね。

審査員レビュー

The cartoonish everyday scenes rendered in pointillism evoked fading memories and recollections through their sketchy style. “Manga” has become a universal language, and its unique narrative effect allows us to sense the timeline unfolding before and after the image. I felt that Tako Tomoshi's work strengthens the connection between the piece and the viewer by inviting them to imagine its past and future, filling in the gaps (loss of information) created by the pointillist style through their own imagination (adding information). It's truly remarkable how this work allowed me to feel a shared sensibility between Thailand and Japan, despite the language barrier, through the medium of manga expression. Hiroshi Murakami

点描で描かれた漫画チックな日常風景は、その掠れた作風から、薄れていく記憶や思い出のような印象を受け取りました。「漫画」という表現は今や世界の共通言語となり、「物語を感じさせる」という漫画表現特有の効果から、その絵の前後に連なる時間軸をも感じさせてくれます。たこ・灯火さんの作品は、作品の過去や未来に対して想像を巡らせることが、点描で表現された作品の掠れ（情報の喪失）を観覧者の想像（情報の加筆）によって埋めることで、作品と観覧者との結びつきを強くしているのかもと感じました。言語の異なるタイと日本の間で、漫画表現を通して共通感覚を感じれたことはとても素晴らしい作品だと思います。村上博史
