プロフィール私はロンドンを拠点に活動するアーティストです。私のアート実践は、外見至上主義や性被害をめぐる女性への抑圧を主なテーマとし、家父長制社会で育った日本人女性としての視点から、金属、言葉、シリコンなどの素材を用いて、主に彫刻を通して展開しています。
山梨県に生まれ、東京で育った私は、「女性はこうあるべき」「こう振る舞うべき」といった規範に囲まれて成長してきました。協調性が重んじられる日本社会では、共同体の中で行われる静かな暴力が可視化されにくく、沈黙によって覆い隠されています。「日本人女性であればこのような外見が正解である」といった言説は、メディアを通じて日常に暴力的に浸透し、体の細さや髪の長さ、顔のかたちにまで期待や規定を及ぼします。性被害は職場や公共の場、あるいは友人関係の中でも日常的に存在しており、その多くは社会に訴えられることなく、被害者だけがその事実を知っています。
私は作品を通して、こうした見えにくい暴力性に向き合っています。そして、社会に深く根づいた「これが普通である」と信じ込まされている規範に注意を向け、その残酷さを浮かび上がらせることで、私たちの認識を揺さぶり、転覆させることを目指しています。私の芸術的プロセスは、個人的な歴史や経験、記憶を出発点に、個人と社会、過去と現在のあいだにある緊張関係を手がかりとして、社会的問題が反映される公共的な文脈と結びついています。
I am an artist living and practicing in London. My work explores the oppression of women through the lenses of appearance-based discrimination and sexual violence. Drawing from my perspective as a Japanese woman raised in a patriarchal society, I create sculptures, installations, and paintings using materials such as metal, language, silicone, sound, and photography.
Born in Yamanashi and raised in Tokyo, I grew up surrounded by social expectations that dictated ‘how women should look and behave’. In a society like Japan, where harmony and conformity are highly valued, the subtle violence that occurs within communities often remains invisible, hidden beneath layers of silence. Phrases like ‘This is the right way for a Japanese woman to look’ are violently perpetuated through the media and extend to expectations around body size, hair length, and facial features. Sexual violence is widespread in workplaces, public spaces, and even among friends, yet most incidents remain unspoken, known only to the victims themselves.
Through my artistic practice, I confront these invisible forms of violence. By drawing attention to the normative frameworks we are made to believe as “normal,” I aim to expose their cruelty and destabilize the assumptions that govern our perception of the world. This process begins with personal history, experience, and memory. It seeks to connect these intimate origins with public contexts in which social issues take shape—navigating the tensions between the individual and society, and between the past and the present.
